The Port System Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea, which manages the ports of La Spezia and Marina di Carrara, is a national model for integration between port, railway, and hinterland, focusing on intermodality, innovation, and sustainability.
La Spezia stands out for its high share of rail traffic, with peaks of 40% of container traffic in the first two months of 2025. Investments in infrastructure and technology have made it possible to increase logistical efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The extensive rail network connects the port to the main freight markets in Northern Italy and Europe, strengthening its strategic role. The APNet information system improves interoperability between port operators. The “La Spezia 5.0” project integrates advanced digitization and customs simplification. The upgrading of the rail hub with new 750-meter tracks consolidates operational efficiency.
The approach adopted by the Port Authority demonstrates how intermodality can become a lever for sustainable competitiveness for the Italian logistics system and the Mediterranean.
